JOB SUMMARY

The Controller is responsible for overseeing the organization's financial operations, with a particular emphasis on cost accounting and project accounting. This role ensures the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting, supports strategic decision-making, aligns with Burger’s operational goals, and provides insights into the financial health of the organization. The Controller collaborates with executive management, project managers, and other stakeholders to maintain robust accounting systems and practices, ensure compliance, and drive process improvements.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Ensure compliance with company policies and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and relevant regulatory requirements.
  2. Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets.
  3. Oversee all aspects of accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general ledger.
  4. Oversee all aspects of cost accounting, including project costing, variance analysis, and inventory valuation.
  5. Implement systems to accurately track, allocate, and report costs across departments and projects.
  6. Analyze cost structures and work with all stakeholders to identify opportunities for cost reduction and operational efficiency.
  7. Lead the preparation and analysis of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  8. Lead the preparation and financial planning and analysis of annual and multi-year budgets in support of strategic planning and budgeting processes and Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) process.
  9. Oversee accounting for multi‑phase projects, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance tracking within the S&OP process.
  10. Partner with executives and managers to ensure accurate revenue recognition, cost accounting, expense allocation, and compliance with contract terms.
  11. Partner with executives and managers to develop, implement, and continuously improve project-specific reporting and analysis to support project performance reviews and strategic decisions.
  12. Lead the accounting team, providing coaching, training, performance management, and promote a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
  13. Utilize knowledge of finance to provide leadership, mentoring of managers to improve financial acumen and integrity, and influence across the organization.
  14. Collaborate with stakeholders to evaluate and enhance accounting processes and systems to improve efficiency and accuracy by leveraging lean practices.
  15. Collaborate in the review of new technologies and best practices in financial management, make recommendations, and participate in implementation.
  16. Partner with operations to develop, evaluate, and validate CAPEX proposals that align with strategic and financial objectives.

POSITION AND DECISION MAKING:

  1. This position reports directly to the CFO and has the Accounting Assistant as a direct report.
  2. Ability to influence, without authority, company leadership and management on financial matters within scope of responsibilities.
  3. Exercise judgment consistent with Burger’s mission, vision and code of business conduct on a regular and continuous basis. Assume full responsibility for appropriate decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on Burger, its staff, vendors and the quality of service within the assigned operational area.

COMMUNICATION:

Must demonstrate exceptional communication skills, including verbal and written communication and attentive listening. Provide positive and effective communication with customers, customer representatives, suppliers, and Burger associates. Strong English-speaking skills are required, with knowledge of a second language a plus.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance (CMA preferred).
  2. Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting experience, including cost accounting and project accounting roles.
  3. Strong knowledge of cost accounting principles, project accounting, and GAAP.
  4. Proficiency with accounting software, ERP systems, and advanced Excel skills.
  5. Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  6. Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  7. Ability to lead project teams to successful conclusions including diverse and multiple team members throughout the organization.
  8. Proficiency in creation and use of metrics and ability to mentor others in the requirement to measure performance at all levels and against objectives and budgets.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Sitting at desk in office environment for an extended period while working on a PC. The employee is occasionally required to stand, as well as walk, climb, and visit all company locations. Occasional light lifting is likely for moving and carrying boxes and records. Production area visits as needed, but typically short in duration. While in production areas, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, and the noise level is usually moderate.
